Better Than Tap? Here's What the Label Doesn't Say.

It's an easy assumption to make: bottled water comes from a pristine source, goes through rigorous purification, and arrives sealed and safe. Tap water, by contrast, feels municipal, aging, and out of your control.

The reality is more nuanced — and in some specific ways, less reassuring than the marketing suggests.

Municipal tap water is regulated by the EPA under the Safe Drinking Water Act, which requires regular testing and public reporting — your water utility is legally required to publish an annual water quality report.

Bottled water, by contrast, falls under FDA regulation as a packaged food product — a framework with less frequent testing requirements and no public reporting mandate in most cases.

Here's the part that surprises most people: a significant share of bottled water on store shelves is simply filtered municipal tap water — the same source as what comes out of your faucet, run through additional filtration and sold at a steep markup.

This isn't a scandal so much as an open secret in the industry. The "spring water" marketing on the label doesn't always reflect the actual source.
