ClearVista Water Systems™ · Prescott, AZ
If you've battled white crust on your faucets or stiff towels fresh out of the dryer, you've already met Arizona's hard water. Here's the science behind it — and what it costs you.
The Geology
Arizona's water hardness isn't bad luck — it's geology. Much of our groundwater travels through limestone, gypsum, and calcium-rich rock formations before it ever reaches a treatment plant or your tap.
As water moves through these mineral deposits, it picks up dissolved calcium and magnesium — the two minerals that define "hard water." The longer the water sits in contact with these rock layers, the harder it becomes.
Prescott sits in a region with naturally high mineral content in its aquifers, which is why hard water here isn't an occasional nuisance — it's the baseline.
Measuring It
Water hardness is measured in grains per gallon (GPG) — the same unit used by in-home test kits, so you can compare your own results directly against the scale below.
Many Prescott homes test well above 10 GPG — sometimes significantly higher depending on the well or municipal source. That's the range where scale buildup, appliance strain, and skin/hair effects become hard to ignore.
The Real Cost
Hardness isn't just a cosmetic issue. Calcium and magnesium deposits build up inside pipes, water heaters, and appliances over time — reducing efficiency and shortening lifespan.
"A water heater running on hard water can lose significant efficiency within just a few years, simply from internal scale buildup."
Beyond appliances, hard water makes soap and shampoo harder to rinse fully, which is often the real reason behind dry skin, dull hair, and that filmy feeling on shower glass no amount of scrubbing seems to fix.
Side by Side
Here's what changes once hardness is addressed at the source:
Untreated
Visible scale on fixtures and glass
Reduced appliance lifespan
Soap doesn't fully rinse away
Stiff, dull laundry
Treated
No salt, no scale, no backwash waste
Longer-lasting appliances and fixtures
Softer skin and hair, naturally
Brighter, softer laundry
